What's in a Name?

A name tells us about a person’s lineage and has a way of tying a grounded past to an uncertain future.  A name tells a story of past experience while weaving past into the present. A name defines you and simply put, it makes you: you.

A name also has a way of turning a passion to reality.  When we founded Never Forget Elephant Foundation in January, 2019 we set off on a small endeavor of choosing our name.  We are a small, yet mighty, group from different corners of the world, lucky to have found each other at this time in our lives to combine our individual passion into one significant undertaking of trying to help as many captive elephants in Thailand as possible.  In comparison to the work we had ahead of us, a name should be easy, right?

Well, as it turns out, choosing a name isn’t so easy.  There are so many choices and combinations of words; enough to make your head spin.  How would we best tie our mission with our name, in a way that would resonate with people who saw it?  How would we tie the elephants’ past to the present that would translate to a hopeful future?

They say an elephant never forgets.  An elephant never forgets the suffering she has endured at the hands of man, yet she welcomes us into her life with forgiveness and acceptance.  She never forgets her life experiences, but has the will to push on no matter the circumstance. This tenacity gives us optimism for the future.  Our optimism resonates in the fact that we, collectively as a global community, have so much potential to provide a safe haven and sense of security for these incredible beings.  And with that, our name was born. Elephants never forget the good or the bad, and neither should we. And we have great opportunity in the future to provide more good than bad and more love than pain.

We thank you for reading our first, of hopefully many, blog posts.  We are here to show up each day to carry out our mission in protecting this beautiful, vulnerable species.  We are a group of five fiercely passionate and committed women and one inspirational Karen man who is the root of our mission.  While we each come from a vast array of backgrounds and cultures, we are each united in moving together through our lives with a compassion-forward approach.  And although the work we are doing may be serious in nature, our objective here on our blog is to engage with you in lighter spirit, where you can get to know us as we travel on this journey together.  Our hope is that our mission resonates with you and that you feel inspired to join us off the grid where elephants lovingly welcome all of us into their herd. Ta-blu, or thank you, for your support. We look forward to getting to know you!
